Conference Reflections: NatCon 2023

After attending three days of learning sessions from some of the most forward-thinking behavioral health professionals in the industry at NatCon 23, one of the key takeaways for me was the focus on the importance of good leadership.

It’s clear that many providers are struggling with the fallout from the Great Resignation. Keynote speakers highlighted leadership strategies to help retain staff by making careful selections in talent acquisitions, as well as supporting current staff by creating strong leaders within their organizations.  Some of the main points they shared focused on getting out and listening to staff needs, responsibility for staff growth, and completing performance evaluations that not only evaluate the staff but also what the supervisor intends to work on to build accountability.

Much has been written about the wisdom of having an effective communication plan in place at the start of an EHR implementation to successfully manage the how, what and when to communicate during the transitional process. As a result, another focus of the conference spotlighted the use of strong leadership strategies to make EHR implementations successful by effectively moving staff through the stages of change for a smooth transition.

NatCon23 workshops also highlighted education on evidence-based treatment modalities, finance (such as RCM and funding sources), leadership growth, and more. One of our customers had an opportunity to present at the conference. They shared some of their stories in treating patients with Opioid Use Disorder by providing successful treatment outcomes to women at a methadone clinic through the use of our Axiom EHR software and partnering with an in-house pharmacy.

NatCon 23 was an inspiring experience – and one with practical lessons in leadership that all attendees could take back to their organizations.
